DUMFRIES and District 41 Club recently held their 11th Burns Supper at the town’s historic Globe Inn.
The evening started off with chairman Alan Price welcoming all and introducing all the guests. Alan, also thanked past chairman Keith for his many years in the chair and he is looking forward to his tenure for the years to come.
Music also played a large role in the celebration started off with accordionist Lee McQueen, and the company singing a rousing rendition of ‘Rantin, Rovin Robin’.
It was then over to senior member David Banford to say grace prior to the meal being served. After the soup course it was then time for the haggis to be piped in by Scott Sloan, followed by the chef carrying the haggis and placed it down on the table, whereby chairman Alan did the Address to the Haggis with much aplomb and toasted by all before it was then piped back out to be served.
Following the meal there were talks and poetry reading of Burns’ work including ‘Tam O’ Shanter’ and ‘Tae a mouse’ as well as more music. The main speaker of the evening was Stephen Hastie. spoke very highly of Burns live and it was a very interesting immortal memory and toast to Burns, followed by the company giving him a rapturous applause.
After a resounding song of ‘The Star O’ Rabbie Burns’ by the company, Alan Price then gave the closing remarks and thanked all for attending and wished them a safe journey home.
The evening was then completed by the whole company singing ‘Auld Lang Syne’.
