Historic fair ceremony returns
A LONG-STANDING tradition will be resurrected in Dumfries tomorrow night.
For an official opening ceremony will take place on Thursday evening to mark the return of the Rood Fair.
It’s the first time ‘in living memory’ that such an event has been staged and the organisers are hoping for a large turnout.
They said: “The show goes on!
“A tradition which hasn’t happened on the ‘Sands for at least 80 years will be reinvigorated.
“Members of the public are cordially invited by fair organiser Raynor Codona and Richard Wilmot, chair of the Scottish Section of the Showman’s Guild – who have been bringing fairground fun to the Whitesands all their lives!
“Provost Tracey Little will be welcomed, there will be brief speeches, and the Provost will ring a bell to open the fair – setting the stage for six days of fun and entertainment for all ages.”
After the opening, VIP guests and politicians will take a spin on the historic Coronation Waltzer, followed by a walk down the Whitesands towards Biddall’s Bridge.
It all starts at 6 pm near the Waltzer and is free to attend, although there is a charge for rides. However, a limited number of passes will be given out as well as free gifts and candy floss.
