Group formed to maintain burgh war memorial
A GROUP has been formed to raise funds and carry out essential maintenance to ensure Lochmaben’s war memorial stays on top form. Over time the High Street memorial has been affected by weathering and general wear. Going forward, to make sure it remains safe, dignified and fitting to honour those it represents, it has now been decided to establish a trust to help try and get grants to maintain the structure. Essential maintenance will consist of cleaning, repairs, restoration of inscriptions and landscaping immediately surrounding the plinth. The group was formed due to future funding needs as flowers will no longer be provided by Dumfries and Galloway Council. A spokesman for the group said: “Conservation and repairs will follow the principles of minimum intervention and retention of original fabric. “The trustees are eight local residents, bringing experience, advice and practical skills along with a deep respect for the memorial’s purpose. “They will work with commitment, transparency and along with community support, the memorial will remain a meaningful tribute for years to come.” Member Carol Rogerson spoke about the new group at Lochmaben Community Council last week. She said: “I know the memorial is looking a bit sorry at the moment. The weather hasn’t helped, but we’ll certainly have a lot of work commencing on the memorial soon. I wanted to make sure people know that work will happen.” Community council chairwoman Kenelma McCrae responded: “We want to thank yourself and your family for all the hard work you do with the memorial. It always looks good and this is positive news about the group to maintain its future looks.”
