WORK is taking place to explore the potential for GP services in Stranraer to be integrated onto the Galloway Community Hospital campus. The option of these services being housed within an NHS-owned building on the hospital site is being considered. It comes as the lease on the nearby rented GP premises is set to expire in the middle of next year. Galloway Community Hospital has already expanded over the years to include the Oak Tree Family Centre and on-site mental health services. Linda Bunney, head of the region’s primary care services, yesterday said: “Our focus is on ensuring that GP services in Stranraer are supported, and able to develop for the future. “We recognise that there can be benefits from services being located close together, and we want to see that retained and able to continue.” No decision has yet been taken. The current range of GP services and every service currently on the Galloway Community Hospital campus would continue to be delivered if this approach was taken forward.” Further detailed assessment will be needed to determine how it could be delivered in practice. And officials have stressed that no final decisions have yet been made, and they are continuing to work closely with the GP practices. NHS head of estates Janette Park added: “Any option taken forward would need to demonstrate that it is deliverable and supports the long-term sustainability of services in Stranraer.” If initial work suggests potential in the move, the Board will fully engage with staff, patients and carers so their input can help shape any approach.
