A new BBC Radio 4 programme has been aired featuring some young women's network members from Dumfries and Galloway.

The short episodes of About The Girls cover friendship, sex and consent, education, life online and becoming a woman.

The programmes are dedicated to exploring the pressures, hopes and profound challenges shaping the lives of teenage girls today. They have been made by journalist and documentary maker Catherine Carr, who heard directly from girls across the UK about the issues defining their generation.

Over the course of making the series, Catherine met around 150 girls and young women aged 11–24, with most being between 11 and 19. She spoke to them in classrooms, youth clubs, sports halls and community centres, including locally. Along the way, she sought the insight of the adults who support them.

The aim is to bring the same sense of intimacy and revelation as Catherine Carr’s 2024 series, About The Boys, which explored experiences of boyhood in 21st century Britain as part of a wider season of programming on boys across the BBC.
