Ghostly goings on at the tower
A NIGHT of history, mystery, and hauntings has taken place at Gilnockie Tower near Canonbie.
The Mostly Ghostly team visited the ancient tower for their first-ever public ghost hunt.
They were shown round by project manager Ian Martin, who shared the powerful history of the Border Reivers and the evocative Debatable Lands. He highlighted how every floor holds its own unique story
With the historical foundations laid, Mostly Ghostly members created a calm and welcoming atmosphere, inviting any possible inhabitants to communicate respectfully and peacefully.
And throughout the evening, guests reported remarkable experiences - from sudden chills and gentle touches, to the sensation of a child holding someone’s hand, and even the soft pressure of a hunting dog leaning against leg.

Using dowsing rods, crystals, and other traditional techniques, the group say they ‘made meaningful connections that grew stronger as the night progressed’.
By the end of the investigation, participants felt they had made contact with the Lady of the Tower, two children, a guard, and the faithful hunting dog who may still roam the grounds.
Mostly Ghostly founder Kathleen Cronie said: “We’re delighted with the success of the Gilnockie Tower Ghost Hunt and thoroughly enjoyed welcoming guests to experience its unique and compelling history. “The curious events reported throughout the night sparked real interest among the group, and it was great to see everyone sharing their thoughts and theories while exploring this ancient tower house.”
She hopes they can return to carry out further research and thanked all who helped with the event.
A Gilnockie spokesperson added: “It was an extraordinary night filled with curiosity, emotion, and a renewed appreciation for the stories the tower continues to hold.”
