Get on your bike

A FORMER Annan Rugby player is recruiting volunteers to join him on an upcoming charity bike ride to raise money and awareness in the fight against Motor Neurone Disease.

Billy Henderson, from Kirtlebridge, currently helps coach the girls’ team at Violetbank.

And he is on the hunt for people to join him for Doddie’s Grand Bike Tour of Scotland in February next year.

It is all being organised by former Scotland international Rob Wainwright in aid of the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.

And it follows on from the success of the Doddie Cup 500 ride in 2022, the Doddie Cup 555 Ride in 2023 and All Roads Lead to Rome in 2024, which Billy took part in.

Various Scottish, Welsh, English and Irish ex internationals are all set to take part in the new fundraising effort.

The cycle will begin on February 5, with riders pedalling from the South West of Scotland to cover a route of around 700 miles over four days, and it will end in Edinburgh on Saturday February 8.

Billy said: “There will be a stop for refreshments and entertainment at Violetbank, then onwards to various rugby clubs and royal residences around Scotland, finishing at Edinburgh Castle on Saturday February 8, with a big bike parade to Murrayfield ahead of the Ireland game on the Sunday.”

Billy added: “Currently these bike rides have raised over £2m.

“If anyone wants to form a Team Annan and enter, give me a shout, you can do whole route with me or just a part.

“If anyone wants to help out with the hosting and hospitality to our visitors, also give me a shout.”

You can get in touch with Billy by contacting Annan Rugby through their Facebook page or website.
