Free entry to historic mill

MARK National Mills weekend with a free visit to a historic site in New Abbey.

This weekend’s celebration shines a spotlight on the heritage and history of mills, and the people who care for them today.

Visitors can head along to New Abbey Corn Mill to find out how the 18th century mill worked and hear the stories of some of its millers, whilst admiring the buildings and machinery that are just as the last miller left them more than 65 years ago.

Carolaan Harrop, monument manager for New Abbey Corn Mill at Historic Environment Scotland which manages the site, said: “We’re thrilled to be taking part in National Mills Weekend. This year, National Mills Weekend will focus on the way that mills have been recorded in pictorial form with the theme ‘Mills in Time’.

“Join us at New Abbey Corn Mill to discover how the site was used from the 18th century right up until 1948, offering a wonderful insight into Scottish rural life in years gone by.

“There will be lots of activities to get involved with throughout the day, plus our knowledgeable site staff will be on hand to explain how the mills would have functioned and their history.”

National Mills Weekend takes place on Saturday and Sunday from 10 am-4.30 pm with last entry at 4 pm. Free tickets can be booked online and advanced booking is recommended.
