Forever home secured for trust
A HISTORIC trust has secured its forever home following a community asset transfer.
The Whithorn Trust has been working towards the transfer of ownership of its George Street base for a number of months. The building has served as visitor centre at the time of the Whithorn excavations.
Since becoming tenants nearly 40 years ago the trust has invested a significant amount of money in the building, and requested the transfer for the sum of £1 to be able to continue its work.
A spokesperson said: “The Whithorn Trust has made substantial investment in the building over the last five years, ranging from new windows to an insulated roof and double-glazed shopfront.
“We are now in a position to kickstart plans for new storage for our vast archaeological archive, while we make improvements to the upper floor, such as low energy lighting and other energy efficient measures to reduce our carbon footprint.
“This community asset transfer gives us the assurance that we are investing in the asset long-term to benefit our charity and the the work it does to interpret and publicise Whithorn’s story. We’d like to thank all the council officers who coached us through the process.”
