Flu and norovirus warning
PATIENTS and staff at hospitals in the region are being asked to wear masks after a spike in flu and norovirus cases. Health chiefs today revealed there has been a 'sharp rise' in both conditions in communities across the region. As a result, it is heaping pressure on health and social care. Some hospital wards have been closed to new admissions, visiting has been restricted across all sites, and the use of masks reintroduced - as the combination of illnesses prompts appeals for public co-operation to help combat the challenge. Medical director for NHS Dumfries and Galloway Dr Kenneth Donaldson said: “We are currently seeing a significant increase in both respiratory and gastrointestinal infections across the region. “Seasonal flu has arrived early this year, and we are also managing a rising number of norovirus outbreaks. “These illnesses are circulating widely in the community and are now having a major impact on services.” Dr Donaldson added: “To help limit the spread of infection, we are asking for the public’s continued support. “Please do not visit hospitals, care homes, or other healthcare settings if you are unwell. Even mild symptoms can easily pass to others and have serious consequences for vulnerable patients.”
