Flooded road frustrations

FLOODING on a road near Beattock is causing ‘serious’ concern amongst residents.

The unclassified rural road, which serves three homes and Kirkpatrick Juxta Church, has transformed into a rapid river after a stream burst its banks to flood the road entrance adjacent to fields.

However, this is not the first this road has had major issues as in 2020 a hole appeared and steadily grew over three years into a gaping sinkhole that stretched to the width of the road.

At that time both Dumfries and Galloway Council and the Church of Scotland denied that the road was their responsibility to maintain, and it was later revealed that it was privately owned.

It is still unclear today who owns the road but its issues continue as residents have recently reported that the metal panels covering the sinkhole ‘are ready to give way’.

The mystery of the road will be discussed at the next meeting of Kirkpatrick Juxta Community Council.

Member Richard Mathison yesterday said: “This has been an active issue at community council for sometime and we’re no further forward.

“Councillor Stephen Thompson has been looking into it as well but he hasn’t got very far either.

“It’s a road that no one wants to claim, and it’s frustrating because as Kirkpatrick Juxta Community Council we shouldn’t have tell residents that we don’t have answers.

“More than anything, it’s dangerous, the metal plates are coming away from the road, at the corners they are one to two inches off the ground. If it’s not fixed soon there will be an accident.”
