Fish deaths riddle

MYSTERY fish deaths in one of the region's reservoirs are being investigated by fishing experts.

Buittle reservoir near Dalbeattie has now been closed to all fishing while experts try to find the cause of deaths which have been reported by anglers.

A statement from the Dalbeattie Angling Association said that the reservoir had been closed to all fishing on the advice of the Galloway Fisheries Trust.

The secretary and chairman of the Association, Will Marshall, explained that they had a number of unexplained fish mortalities notified to them and they were working with the Fisheries Trust, the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency and Scottish water to fully investigate this matter.

The statement added: “In the meantime it is felt that fishing pressure will cause extra stress to weaken stocks. We expect to know more in the next few days and hope to re-open the reservoir shortly.

“Please do not be alarmed, this is only a precautionary measure based on fish welfare and there is no danger to human health or any long-term consequences to the fishing we all enjoy at the reservoir.”

The Buittle reservoir supplied water for Dalbeattie town until the 1960s and has been used by the Dalbeattie Angling Association for more than 50 years.
