First responders plea

VOLUNTEERS are being sought for Moffat’s first responders.

The group are in urgent need of new members to respond to emergency calls within the town.

Group member Tony Few said this week: “For the last 14 years we have been responding to calls for assistance every week in the event of a medical emergency, when the doctors surgery is closed and the ambulance has yet to arrive.

“In Moffat, it takes an average of 20 minutes for an ambulance to attend on scene. Having the First Responders Scheme in our community increases considerably the chances of survival.

“As local volunteers, first responders are able to respond quickly to potential life-threatening call outs arriving on scene before the emergency ambulance.”

The Scottish Ambulance Service will be holding training sessions in Moffat and Beattock next month and Tony is encouraging as many people as possible to join.

He added: “Some of our past volunteers have gone on to become ambulance technicians and paramedics in their own right

“Scottish Ambulance Service will be running training courses in June for new volunteers. If you are interested in helping us to continue to offer this vital service for the residents and visitors to Moffat and Beattock, please contact us.”

For more information about the training sessions call 07802 437756.
