Family’s appeal for help to save pony

A WORRIED family have launched a crowdfunder appeal to help treat their beloved pet pony.

The Mcewens, who live at Waterbeck, were devastated to find out 20-year-old halflinger Beau has a fast spreading cancer and needs a life saving operation, scheduled for next week at a cost of up to £5000.

But it could not have come at a worse time for them as dad Malcolm’s driving school business is closed due to covid, with the resultant impact on their income.

He said: “Due to his age and previous medical history, we couldn’t get insurance for Beau. He requires a total penis amputation in Edinburgh and I’m struggling in these hard times to cover this as I am a self employed driving instructor and unable to work due to covid.

“I wish I didn’t have to ask for help, but I didn’t really have any other choice, I have tried everything else.”

They set up the crowdfunding appeal earlier this week and Malcolm say he has been ‘overwhelmed’ by the generosity shown so far, especially during these difficult times.

He added: “I know it’s a hard time and money is so tight.

“We are just trying to give him the best chance.

“Beau is our pet and he is so good with my kids, and is a real character, he deserves every chance and that’s what he’s gonna get, just like any pet would.

“The problem with horses and ponies is the bigger the animals, the bigger the vet bills.

“They won’t know if it has spread until they do the operation and, with me not able to work again, it has come at the worst possible time.”
