Family service marks 30 years
AN MSP has paid tribute to the long-standing contribution of Action for Children in Upper Nithsdale, as the charity marks more than three decades of delivering dedicated support to local children and families. South Scotland MSP Colin Smyth visited the Upper Nithsdale Family Service in Kelloholm recently. He met with Jill Wright, manager of Action for Children Upper Nithsdale Family Service, and Cheryl-Ann Cruickshank, operational director of Children’s Services for Action for Children in Scotland, who shared insights into the charity’s work supporting families in Kelloholm, Kirkconnel and Sanquhar and surrounding areas through a wide range of practical and emotional services. Since opening in 1994, the service has become a trusted part of the local community. It provides whole-family support aimed at strengthening relationships, building resilience and wellbeing, and helping children thrive. Services include after-school clubs, mental health and wellbeing support, parenting programmes, and help for families experiencing financial pressures. Colin Smyth said: “Action for Children has been part of the fabric of this community for over 30 years—and what they’ve achieved in that time is remarkable. “They’re not just a service provider, they’re a lifeline for so many local families. Whether it’s supporting children’s wellbeing, providing after-school activities, or helping families through the rising cost of living, their presence in Upper Nithsdale has made an immeasurable difference. “You don’t often see a charity delivering such a wide range of support in one place, and even less so maintaining that kind of presence in a rural area like this for so long. It speaks volumes about the dedication of the staff, the trust they’ve built locally, and the continuing need for these services." Meanwhile, Jill Wright said: “We’re so proud of our local history supporting families in practical and emotional ways. “We work hard to ensure every child has a safe and happy childhood, and it means a lot to have that recognised.” * Picture shows Colin Smyth MSP with Jill Wright and Cheryl-Ann Cruickshank
