Events planned regionwide for Gaelic week

WORLD Gaelic Week is quickly approaching, and Dumfries and Galloway Council is working alongside the voluntary group Gàidhlig DumGal to promote a programme for the celebration.

From February 24 to March 2, this area will honour its Gaelic connections and presence in the community and people of all ages are invited to take part in the activities.

Music, storytelling for young children in libraries, and a chance to try out the Gaelic language at Stranraer is one of the events planned.

There will be a ceilidh will in Thornhill, as well as a Gaelic film screening at the Robert Burns Centre in Dumfries.

In addition, there will be an educational opportunity at Kirkcudbright Galleries, pictured, hosted by Professor Robby Ó Maolalaigh, for those interested in Gaelic within the region.

During the week, the Dumfries and Galloway Council library service will also provide a special Gaelic book collection for all ages, available and libraries and digitally via BorrowBox.

The celebration is a part of the larger initiative for a Gaelic Language Plan by the council, hoping to preserve the culture within the region.

Commenting, Cllr Lynne Davis said: “The council has a statutory requirement to have a Gaelic language plan in place and we are very grateful to the national body Bòrd na Gàidhlig for providing funding for a one-year post to help take forward the activities and projects outlined within our plan.”
