THE much-loved Nithraid River Festival returns next Saturday, marking its 13th year with a vibrant and bold celebration.

Organised by EcoArt, the day begins with the traditional Nithraid river race, as boats set sail from Glencaple at 12 pm, travelling up the River Nith and arriving in Dumfries between 1-2 pm, tide permitting. At the same time, the iconic Salty Coo Procession departs from the Planestanes, led by Alex Rigg of Oceanallover, featuring colourful display of banners, flags and costumes created by community groups.

Nithraid organiser Mark Zygadlo said: “It’s really exciting to see Nithraid continue to evolve. Now under the stewardship of EcoArt, we’re proud to maintain the fun and spectacle of the river race,

while expanding the programme to include free creative activities with a strong environmental focus.”

This year’s Nithraid features workshops, performances, exhibitions and talks that encourage the public to reconnect with the River Nith. EcoArt has collaborated with community groups from across the river’s journey from Thornhill, Sanquhar and Kingholm Quay to the Theatre Royal and Galloway College - to create unique garments, flags and totems that will be carried in the Salty Coo Procession.
