MOTHER daughter duo Alison and Fiona Rogerson will pull on their trainers for their first ever marathon charity challenge.

The pair have run half marathons in the past for causes close to their family’s hearts, including the Ectopic Pregnancy Trust and the Great North Air Ambulance.

Now they are upping the ante as they prepare to run their first marathon in June in Malvern in aid of Canine Concern Scotland, also known as Therapets.

The 27 mile route near Worcester will take them across the Malvern Hills with 5000 ft of ascent.

Family dog, two-year-old Duggee, has been with the charity since November and is now a regular visitor to Carlingwark Care Home, with Alison hopeful that he’ll soon be allowed to visit other care homes, hospitals and schools.

She explained: “We registered Duggae as a therapet last November and since then he’s been to Carlingwark Care Home on a regular basis. So when we decided to do a marathon it was the obvious choice for us, because it’s a great free service and it brings a lot of joy to the people it helps.

“And Duggae loves it, he’s such soulful wee dog, he loves being around people and always seems to know when you’re needing a cuddle. He just doesn’t have a malicious bone in his body.”

Not one to be left out, Duggae has been accompanying Alison and Fiona on their training runs, but he won’t be making the journey down south next month.

Alison added: “He comes out and trains with us, and that is going quite well. We’ve about half of the Annandale Way as part of training going from Lochmaben to Newbie and the plan is to do the other half before we do the full stretch.”

The duo have set themselves a £500 fundraising goal, which would be enough to fund two therapets for a full year. So far, they have raised £223 through their Just Giving page and are excited about the challenge ahead.

Alison said: “It’s such a good cause, you can see the impact being around animals has on people and the charity don’t ask for much and they’re always looking for more volunteers in Annandale and Eskdale.

“We are excited about the marathon, we’ve got our outfits all sorted so we’ll be running wearing dog ears and vests. We love to dress up for these things, it just makes it a bit more fun and life’s too short to be serious all the time.”
