Dedicated litter pickers reveal yearly total
MORE than 560 bags of rubbish were gathered in and around Lockerbie last year by volunteers.
Members of Lockerbie Wombles and Warriors have now revealed their total for 2025.
And they have already started their 2026 litter picks, with an appeal for more people to join the ranks.
A weekly event is planned on either a Saturday or Sunday and anyone who can take part is encouraged to message the Facebook group for more information.
Commenting on last year’s collection, founder member Marjatta Wildwood said: “That’s a lot of rubbish that should never be there! “We have done well to try to collect as much as possible. Please do what you can, that’s all we can ask.
“I feel it’s appropriate to remind everyone of why we are doing what we are doing: we want to protect what is here, the beautiful countryside and the creatures that live in it.
“Why destroy this? When it’s gone it will be hard to replace. Our aim is to take care of the environment around here and leave it in good health for the next generation and for others to come.”
She added: “Please keep supporting us the Lockerbie Wombles in any way that you can - we don’t need your money, just a little bit of time to pick up some rubbish and if you can give us a thumbs up sign when we are out and about that would be great.”
