Culture called on Dumfries

ARTS and heritage professionals across Dumfries and Galloway attended a new event aiming to unite the region’s cultural sector and discuss shared priorities.

Culture Calling took place last week in Dumfries, organised by the Dumfries and Galloway Cultural Partnership, and included speeches, small group sessions, and live performances from local music acts.

The gathering focused on the priorities outlined in the region’s Cultural Strategy, published in March 2022, which aims to enhance the contribution of culture to the future of Dumfries and Galloway and its communities.

Ahead of the event Cllr Maureen Johnstone said: “This is a unique opportunity for organisations and individuals working in the cultural sector to come together, share insights, and to contribute to the ongoing development of our region’s cultural landscape.”

The Partnership is seeking to build broad engagement across the sector, with organisers hoping to open up participation to as many voices as possible. The ultimate goal is an open channel of collaboration, allowing all involved in the sectors to make their voices heard.

“We hope the thematic groups will provide us all with the opportunity to share knowledge and ideas and have our collective voices heard. We invite arts and heritage representatives from around the region to join a thematic group which aligns with their areas of interest and work,” said Tabi Mudaliar, creative director of DG Unlimited.
