A NEW volunteering service is offering companionship to patients in the region undergoing palliative care.

It is being run by Marie Curie to provide comfort and emotional support to people approaching the end of life, as well as their families.

Volunteer services officer Sara Murray, above, said: "It is our mission to ensure that local patients get the emotional and friendly support they deserve.

"As well as supporting people with a cancer diagnosis, we also help people with other terminal illnesses such as heart disease, COPD and MND.

"This new service is making such a positive impact locally."

Sara is responsible for recruiting, training and supporting companion volunteers.

She explained: "Volunteers don't need a medical background or all the answers - just a kind heart, a listening ear and a little time to give.

"As a companion volunteer, you might visit someone and share stories, connect through hobbies/interests, chat about life, update them regarding local or wider activities. Sometimes just a conversation with a cup of tea or coffee in hand provides a steady presence."

Jane Martin, who is the volunteer coordinator for NHS Dumfries and Galloway, has welcomed the new service.

She said: "Our volunteers make such valuable contributions. The very presence of volunteers can improve patient experience, enhance communication, and even create calmer, more supported ward environments."
