THANKS have been expressed to the community for their support after book huts at Lochmaben Primary were vandalised.

The brand new reading sheds, situated in the school grounds, were found damaged last Friday.

Books and boxes were scattered across the field, soaked and ruined, leaving the outdoor reading area in disarray.

Members of Lochmaben Primary Parent Partnership were outraged at the vandalism, which came just a week after the new facilities were put in place and officially launched.

In a post, they said: “Our children were so excited about these new reading spaces for our playground.

“Acts like this don’t just damage property, they hurt our school community.”

And they appealed for donations of books to replenish the empty shelves in time for the new term, adding: “We’re working hard to restore this area and make it welcoming again for our pupils in August.

“Let’s show that kindness and respect will always be stronger than thoughtless behaviour.”

Earlier this week, the partnership gave an update, saying: “We would just like to thank everyone for their kind messages of support and offers of books, it’s been truly heart-warming.

“We will hopefully have the book huts as good as new for August.”

Police were informed of the incident.
