GROUPS in Lockerbie will need to channel their inner entrepreneur to secure community funding in future.

In an attempt to make the grants process easier and clear up any confusion, Lockerbie Community Council (LCC) has agreed that all future applicants must present their cases in person – mirroring beloved television show Dragons’ Den.

The move follows a string of applications that lacked the necessary detail for members to make informed decisions.

By inviting representatives into the room, LCC hopes to eliminate countless emails and get straight to how the money will benefit the town and how it will be used.

The idea was sparked by Annandale North councillor Carolyne Wilson, who pointed to the success of similar schemes nearby.

She said: “At Moffat Community Council, if groups put in an application, they have to come to one of their meetings and present.

“It’s a very good process because if community councillors have questions, they can get them answered right then and there.”

The suggestion was met with unanimous approval with community councillor Roger Claymore clarifying that whilst the paperwork is still required, groups would need to come along.

He added: “What we’re asking for is for groups to send in the application so we can all see it, but then we’d ask a representative or two to come to our meeting.”

As such, a handful of current applicants were to be informed that they need to attend next week’s community council meeting.

That includes Lockerbie Community Choir. The group agreed to cover their town hall hire costs up to £630 but a request for £200 in advertising funds remains on hold until a representative presents their case.

More clarity is also needed from Lockerbie Young Curlers regarding competition entry fees.

In addition, Lockerbie Learning Centre have been asked to resubmit their request and to present their case after successfully fundraising elsewhere.
