The Bouldover facility is moving into the former auction hall on Irish Street.

The news comes three months after they announced the closure of their Annan site following leaks which caused damage to equipment. In addition, the presence of asbestos in the roof made the price of repair work too expensive.

The search to find a new home for the centre and its members soon got underway.

Over the past few months, work has been ongoing to slowly strip down Annan operations and begin transferring equipment to Dumfries.

The removal job was completed a couple of weeks ago.

And yesterday one of the centre’s directors, Andy Weeks, offered an update on the progress so far, saying: “Although the building is half the size of our former premises in Annan, we’re hopeful that the amount of climbing space will not be reduced too much.

“A significant amount of work is needed. Re-assembling our climbing wall is likely to take the bulk of the effort but customer facing zones (reception, toilets, cafe and seating area) are all in need of significant aesthetic improvements.

“We’re extremely grateful to those loyal customers who have assisted us during the move and continue to lend a hand as we prepare the new premises.

“We’re hopeful of opening the doors in early March. We already have bookings for school groups in mid-March.”

Andy hopes that Annan members will come along to the new climbing centre.

He added: “Our geographical reach, when based in Annan, was far reaching. Regularly, customers would come from Castle Douglas, Stranraer, Moffat, Lockerbie, Ayr, Keswick, etc. We are one of the few publicly accessible climbing wall facilities in South West Scotland.”
