A GLOBAL effort is being made to save Applegarth Church and give it a new lease of life.

Members of the Jardine Clan from around the world are spearheading the move in what they are calling ‘an emotional show of unity and pride’ for their original clan church.

They swung into action when the ancient building was closed then put up for sale earlier this year by the Church of Scotland.

An appeal through the Clan Jardine Facebook group sparked a global response and within just 48 hours, pledges totalling nearly £70,000 had poured in.

‘Friends of Applegarth Church SCIO’ will own the historical asset for the community and the vision is that the site will become a community hub, a heritage and educational venue, and a place for blessings, weddings and funerals.

At the helm of the campaign are Andrew and Kirsteen Michell, who live at Applegarth House, next door to the church.

Andrew said: “There is so much history in this hamlet. We believe there has been a church at Applegarth since around 600 AD.

“This is the heritage of the Jardines and other families. We couldn’t see it lost.”

He revealed that clan chief Sir William Jardine has praised the collective effort, noting the emotional ties that bind the Jardine diaspora to their ancestral lands.

These links also extend to other families, says Andrew, noting that the Porteous, Rogersons, Brydens, Johnstones, Dinwoodies, Boyes and Beatties also have their past rooted at Applegarth.

The Michells are excited for a ceremonial handing over of the keys, followed by a blessing, due to take place on Sunday afternoon from 2 pm. Sir William Jardine will be there with his family, and all are welcome to attend.

Andrew added: “Jardines from South Africa, America and beyond now plan to travel to Dumfriesshire to celebrate the transition to a new charity.”

Meanwhile, a website, www.applegarthchurch.org – is also under construction, while a Facebook page has been launched, named Friends of Applegarth Church SCIO.
