PEDAL power helped spur on ten fundraisers who cycled from the Isle of Whithorn to Dumfries.

The 73 mile Brake the Cycle event on September 20 raised £4000 for Tearfund and the CRY/David Hill Memorial Fund.

Marion Glover, Rodger and Lesley Hill, Rev Donald Campbell, Erin Campbell, Andy McDougall, Dave McAdam, David Mowat, Tony and Lorna Read started at the Isle Church at 8.45 am, and had short breaks in Garlieston, Newton Stewart, New Galloway and Castle Douglas before arriving at St George’s in Dumfries at 6.15 pm where they received a warm welcome from friends and family.

The challenge had originally been the idea of the late John Glover MBE, who was an elder at St George’s, and among the group was his wife Marion.

Also participating was Rodger Hill in memory of his late son David and representing CRY. Both of the charity recipients have praised the cyclists’ efforts with Dr Steven Cox, from CRY, describing it as ‘a truly epic and inspirational challenge’

Meanwhile, a St George’s spokesperson said: “While honouring John’s plans for a charity cycle, the team at St George’s and their supporters are delighted to have raised awareness and funds for both Tearfund Scotland and Cardiac Risk in the Young, and are grateful to everyone who has supported them in their efforts to “Brake the Cycle” of world poverty and young sudden cardiac deaths in memory of John Glover and David Hill.”
