A CHRISTMAS collection has once again been launched by the Friends of Women’s Aid group in the region. The local refuge has a shortage of certain items and they hope the public can help. They need donations of the following, with a request that they are in a new condition: -Ladies Christmas gifts - blankets/throws - journals/diaries/pens - colouring books/colouring pens - coffee/tea - cutlery/crockery - single duvets/single duvet cover sets Appeal co-ordinator Marita Jamieson-Barr said: “When a women/family arrive seeking safety in Dumfries, they have fled abuse and they often leave all their belongings behind. “Women’s Aid would like to be able to provide them with cosy blankets/duvets for comfort, these items will be used as they start again. Everyone deserves to feel safe, loved and have homely comforts.” Drop-off points have been set up at Barr’s Garden Centres, Moffat; Whitesyke Garden Centre Of Longtown; Dalbeattie Garden Centre; Heathhall Garden Centre; and Barr’s on the back road. They will accept items up to December 18. Marita added: “Everyone should have the right to comfort and essentials, especially when leaving abuse. “I am hugely thankful to Dumfries Women’s Aid for all the amazing support they provide women/families in Dumfries and Galloway. “I encourage you, if you are able to, please donate as every donation makes such a huge difference for women/families arriving seeking refuge and starting again.” And she knows first-hand what it’s like to escape domestic abuse, saying: “I was in a domestically abuse relationship for seven years and really struggled to leave - I felt trapped and didn’t know what life after abuse would be. “But, I can tell you, there is a life full of love after leaving abuse. “Our local Dumfries Women’s Aid were incredibly supportive, encouraging and gave me hope.” Marita, who is now happily married, is concerned that domestic abuse is a serious issue in is this region, with rising numbers and a waiting list for women and children seeking refuge.
