FREE lantern making workshops will be taking place throughout Dumfries over the next few weeks ahead of a lantern procession later this month.

Families and community members are all being invited to take part in the workshops in the lead-up to the Dumfries Carnival on Saturday January 17.

Visitors can design colourful lanterns that will shine in the procession with all materials provided free of charge.

Myra Smith, the carnival’s community activation manager, said: “With lanterns made by the community lighting up the carnival procession, we’re inviting everyone to be part of one of Dumfries’ most magical winter moments. It’s a wonderful opportunity for young people to explore creativity and spark their imaginations.”

The workshops will take place on:
  • Friday January 9: Tots-friendly session, Heathhall Community Centre from 10 am–4 pm
  • Saturday January 10: Family Saturday session, Lochside Community Centre from 10 am–4 pm
  • Thursday January 15: Drop-in session, Dumfries and Galloway Multicultural Centre (Old Debenhams), 10 am–4 pm
  • Thursday January 15: Summerhill Community Centre from 6–9 pm
  • Friday January 16: Supper Club, 70 High Street, 2–8 pm
