Celebrating women's contributions
DUMFRIES and Galloway Council marked International Women’s Day by celebrating the contribution of women across the region and highlighting the role women play in public life, communities and the workplace. Speaking on Sunday, depute leader Cllr Katie Hagmann said: “International Women’s Day is an important opportunity to recognise the contribution women make in every part of life in Dumfries and Galloway – in our families, our workplaces, our communities and our public services. It’s also a chance to listen, learn and reflect on the experiences of women and to recognise that inclusion and equality is not a ‘one day’ conversation. It is a commitment we demonstrate through our actions, year-round. “International Women’s Day matters because representation and lived experience matter. When women’s voices are heard – in workplaces, communities and decision-making – we make better choices and build stronger, fairer places. “As a council, we want to mark International Women’s Day in a way that is meaningful and grounded in local reality. That means celebrating what women contribute, but it also means recognising barriers women can face and being honest about the work still required – whether in public life, the workplace or simply being heard and respected in everyday spaces.” She added: “One of the most positive things we can do is ensure women and girls see that civic life is something they belong in – that involvement in community activity, local decision-making and public service is open to everyone. International Women’s Day is a moment to highlight that, and to encourage reflection on how we strengthen participation across Dumfries and Galloway.”
