A BABY and two toddlers are in a serious condition in hospital after their pram was struck by a runaway trailer in Dumfries. Emergency services were called to Pleasance Avenue on Monday afternoon after a trailer detached from a car and struck a pram on a pavement. Police said they believed the trailer had become detached from a Mitsubishi Outlander at about 15:15 pm on Monday. The buggy – which had an eight-month old baby and 14 and 18-month old within it – was being pushed by a 18-year-old nursery worker from nearby Gracie Drew Nursery. The baby and two toddlers were taken to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary before being transferred to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow. Their injuries are described as serious. The teen was also taken to a hospital in Dumfries but has since been released. A relative of one of the children hurt in the incident posted on social media. He said: “It’s a bit of a shock. He’s hurt but he will get through it. They are all lucky to still be here. “I would like to thank everyone who came forward to help.” Eyewitness Andrew Clarke said: “I was of the many people who came to help. It was such an awful incident to experience especially at their young ages. Hopefully they all make a quick recovery.” Several residents and members of the public helped at the scene before paramedics, fire crews and police officers arrived. The nursery issued a statement regarding the incident.

A spokesperson said: “We are deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic accident involving three of our beloved children. Our hearts are with them and their families during this incredibly difficult time. “The safety and well-being of the children in our care is always our highest priority, and we are co-operating fully with the authorities as they investigate what happened.” Police Scotland closed the road for an investigation until later that evening and have appealed to the public for information. Road Policing Unit Sergeant David Kerr said: “Our enquiries into this incident are ongoing and we would urge anyone who have witnessed it to come forward. “We would also be keen to speak to anyone who may have dashcam footage from the area. “Anyone who can help is asked to call 101, quoting reference 1870 of October 13.”
