MACHARS artist Frances Ross has been flocking to the area’s schools as part of a special art project.

The project entitled ‘Flock’ is one of the latest initiatives from regional arts organisation Upland, and it’s is shaping up to be one of Upland’s most delightful projects for young people.

Sorbie-based artist Frances, along with fellow ceramicists Clare Dawdry and Ruth Jones, are currently visiting 45 primary and secondary schools where they are getting the children to make 1000 clay birds.

The idea is to fire young people’s imaginations and give them the chance to work with clay, which teaches skills like problem solving and manual dexterity. It is also providing opportunities for those who may want a creative career.

Frances said: “We talk to the children about birds they know and ask them to make one – either from reality or their imagination.

“The results have been wonderful, and they have made everything from pheasants to phoenixes.”

Among those taking part in Flock are pupils from Glenluce Primary School, where the kids unleashed their creativity for their part of the project.

All of the birds made by the children will be displayed in a single sculptural piece as a centrepiece of Spring Fling next May.
