FORESTRY and Land Scotland’s (FLS) South Region teams say they are working swiftly to restore public access to storm-hit forests in Dumfries and Galloway.
However, while efforts are progressing, some areas will remain closed for at least another week.
Colin Binnie, FLS’ south region deputy manager, said: “Our priorities will be on keeping staff and contractors safe, restoring safe access to neighbours and people who live in the forests, and supporting utilities companies in restoring power to homes and communities where this is still an issue.”
As doors reopen to the forest, Mr Binnie urges visitors to exercise caution and adhere to safety guidance when exploring local woodlands, with fallen, unstable trees posing the biggest threat.
Some walking and mountain biking trails, including Glentress and Innerleithen, are now partially open. However, Newcastleton Forest and the 7stanes sites around Dumfries were left significantly damaged. Newcastleton will remain closed, while 7stanes will have some access through Ae and Mabie.
The Dalbeattie Forest remains closed while damage is being measured. Updates will be available as received via the website.
The 7stanes Kirroughtree site in Galloway has limited access: two walking trails, visitor centre, a café, and a bike shop are open to the public.
Visitors are urged to check the FLS website for updates, follow safety signage, and avoid windblown trees. Attempting to clear fallen trees is highly dangerous and should be left to professionals.
