Top fundraiser Jackie zips towards £100k

IT IS a case of ‘third time’s the charm’ for a champion fundraiser as she plans her third zip slide across the River Nith.

Mum-of-three Jackie Armstrong, 48, has so far raised £53k for Maggie’s Cancer Caring.

The Lockerbie grandmother has committed her life to fund-raising since her first cancer diagnosis in 2010.

She credits Maggies, who provide free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their family and friends, as her life line during her multiple cancer battles.

She said: “It’s still vital to raise money for Maggies as they give me support when I need it and anyone with a cancer diagnosis, their family and loved ones.

“Anyone from Dumfries and Galloway receiving radiotherapy have to go to Edinburgh for it and this is where the nearest Maggies Centre is.

“Maggies was also set up by a Dumfries person, unfortunately she passed away before the first one opened, and there are around 20 worldwide

“The centres are not government-funded so relay totally on fundraisers and events like my own.”

Jackie, who is a support worker for Beyond Limits, will host her third zip slide on September 3 later this year. Her last event raised £20k and she hopes this one, which she fears might be the last zip slide, will help push her towards her £100k fund-raising dream.

She said: “This might very well be the last zip slide, depending on what happens with flood defences in Dumfries.

“If it is the last one I hope it will be the biggest and best of all, go out with a bang.”

But the determined fundraisier has not limited herself to just planning one fundraiser, as she is also busy organising an 80s night in Dumfries on June 3.
