Annan and Eskdale

AN underground style map of the Roman roads which once criss crossed Britain has been painstakingly created by an American student.

And the Annandale hill fort of Birrens, near Middlebie, is included.

Sasha Trubetskoy is studying statistics at the University of Chicago and in his spare time makes maps.
His lates project is a subway style diagram of the country’s major Roman roads, based on on the Empire of ca. 125 AD.
Writing on his website, Sasha said: “This was far more complicated than I had initially anticipated. Not only were there way more Roman Roads in Britain than I initially thought, but also their exact locations and extents are not very clear. In a few places I had to get rather creative with the historical evidence.”
Birrens goes under its original name of Blatobulgium on the map and is the northern terminus of the Watling Street route running from Caerwent in Wales.
