Politicians to hear concerns over park future

A CAMPAIGN group aiming to prevent redevelopment of green space in Dumfries have won the attention of politicians.

Dumfries and Galloway Council leader Councillor Elaine Murray and MSPs Colin Smyth and Oliver Mundell are to attend a public meeting this evening focused on the future of Parkhead.

A statement from Noblehill and Parkhead Community Development Association said: “The land, which comprised a substantial area of Common Good land, was sold to Dumfries and Galloway Housing Partnership by Dumfries and Galloway Council earlier this year.

“The association believe this common good land was gifted to the people of Dumfries to be used as open space and that the Council had no moral right to sell it without first consulting the community.

“The association is now campaigning to have the sale reversed and for the land to be returned to the community.”

As a result of a public outcry over the plans, the Save Parkhead campaign group was established before the Noblehill and Parkhead Community Development Association was formally constituted.

A meeting has taken place with DGHP over the planned redevelopment of a site which includes green space, parkland and playing fields in the Noblehill area of Dumfries.

Members of the community made representation to the last meeting of Loreburn Community Council, legal advice has been received and Freedom of Information enquiries submitted.

The next public meeting takes place tonight, Friday August 18, at 7 pm at Noblehill Community Centre in Dumfries.
