New pole plea

A CAMPAIGN to get a new flagpole erected on Lockerbie Town Hall continues . . . three years after it began.

Lockerbie Community Council will now submit an application form to Dumfries and Galloway Council for permission for a new pole on the council-owned property.
At last Tuesday night’s meeting councillor Stephen Thompson said he thought there may be money in the Annandale north ward councillors’ budget to fund the new pole.
Members of the community council expressed their disappointment at the length of time it is taking and say they are now aiming for a new pole to be in place for Armistice Day in November.
Chairwoman Jan Andrews said: “It is disappointing.
“It is a council building; why does the community council have to do it?
“Why do we have to go through a process for a council building?”
And responding, councillor Thompson said: “The council view is that it’s fine.
“Effectively you want to improve the flagpole that’s there and the community council has to be the driver behind this to improve it.”
And referring to any financial issue he said: “We can make the money available should there be a cost to it.”
