Merchant Navy tribute

COASTAL communities in Dumfries and Galloway marked Merchant Navy Day today.

The Red Ensign flew at Annan Town Hall and the council offices in Dumfries to raise awareness of the UK’s ongoing dependence on Merchant Navy seafarers.
Dumfries and Galloway Council was supporting a call from the Seafarers UK charity and the Merchant Navy Association for the UK Merchant Navy’s official flag to be flown on public buildings and landmark flagstaffs.
Many from Solway communities such as Annan and Kirkcudbright served in the Merchant Navy during the two world wars.
