Lorry drivers urged to clean up their act

MEASURES have been put in place to stop lorry drivers flocking to an industrial site in Lockerbie.

Broomhouses Industrial Estate in Lockerbie has long been used as a rest stop by weary drivers. But nearby residents have frequently been left feeling disgusted after litter and human waste was left behind.

Fears have also been expressed that the problem could worsen at the estate after Ponsse, a forest machinery company, leave and move to the new Annan Business Park.

In an effort to clamp down on messy drivers parking up, Annandale North Councillor Graeme Tait has overseen the erection of two new signs to discourage overnight stays at the industrial estate.

He said: “One of the biggest problem areas locally for messy overnight stays is the Broomhouses Industrial Estate.

“Lorry drivers from outwith the area are using the site and throwing away their rubbish and indeed their human waste.

“Nearby residents look onto this site and it is unacceptable for them to see this type of behaviour and be near this type of mess.”

Mr Tait has also made sure that the area will be regularly checked by police and the community safety team.
