Khalid al-Megrahi, eldest son of Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi, has said he plans to move back to Scotland to clear his father’s name.

Speaking publicly, he has said an appeal is imminent now he has the backing of family and there is a lull in fighting in Libya.

The announcement is also the first time Mr Megrahi Jr, 31, has spoken out since his father died four years ago.

He said: “We are fighting because we believe Scotland will give us justice.

“We want justice not just for our family but also for the families of the victims.

“My family have been victims too.

“We believe one day the truth will get out, God willing.”

He claimed that previous appeals have been hampered by crime in Tripoli and a poor police and court system as well as frequent lacks of power making fighting an overseas legal battle difficult.

Megrahi Snr was convicted of the 1988 atrocity at Kamp Van Zeist in the Netherlands and jailed for life in 2001.

He was incarcerated at Barlinnie and Greenock prisons and during that time his wife
